Now I’ve heard of people immersing themselves into certain topics and things in order to get a better feel for what they are going to be writing about, but this professor really takes the cake. For an entire year Professor Will Brooker intends to sleep, eat, and dress exactly like pop icon David Bowie in order to get a better idea of the man he intends to write a book about.
Dangerous Minds provides a quote from Brooker on some of the other methods he has been using to immerse himself saying:
I’ve been reading some of the books that Bowie read, though, and he was very much into the occult, Aleister Crowley, ah, Nazism—you know, all kinds of strange literature, and some of that reading does have an effect on your thinking, especially if you’re doing without sleep, long-distance flights, and so on, you know? If you’re reading some strange science-fiction and books about magic, you know, you can get into Bowie’s head, you can see and sometimes quite a strange place, a dangerous place, a place you wouldn’t want to live too long.
This seems like a pretty bold and ambitious experiment. Personally I think it would be cool if in addition to the book there was also a filmed documentary on this experiment.
