The first track off All Over the Map is a smooth electric guitar version of J.S. Bach’s “Prelude In D Major.” Right from the start, Gordon shows his mastery of the instrument, with slow and waining emotional bends dipped in chunks of reverberated fresh lawn acoustics. It makes for great thinking or rainy, snow day music.
Gordon has worked with several film composers, from John Williams to Marco Beltrami, but All Over the Map is not exactly a love letter to the career the guitarist has made for himself. The artists here are diverse, from different eras and world styles, but through Gordon’s carefully precise guitar work, sound invitingly familiar.
It should be noted that most of the tracks on this album are covers of Bach favorites, but that should not hinder anyone who is trying to listen to classical music. Gordon puts his whole heart in when he plays, making the oldest of the old sound fresher than often remembered.
“Vivo, Con Molto Preciso” is a highlight, as well as “Prelude 4 in E Minor,” but the standout track, deviating from most of the work on this album, is a swinging blues romp courtesy of Laurence Juber entitled “Breaking Point.”
Where the others have historical context in the midst of classical music, hearing Gordon rip into his six string and tumble through riffs is certainly a highlight not to be missed.
If you like classical acoustic and electric guitar, with shades of viola and blues melody, well, here’s your man.
