Review: Ben Brookes – The Motor Car & the Weather Balloon

Aside from screaming “liar liar pants on fire” in his warm and friendly twang, Ben Brookes hits a career high with “Stories in the Rain.” The song is something you might hear at the end of your favorite sitcom, during the season finale sequence where the two main love interests kiss out on the dance floor.

Yep. That exact.

His debut album, The Motor Car & The Weather Balloon, boasts production features that include former Prince drummer Michael Bland, Bob Dylan keyboardist Greg Inhofer, and Badfinger’s Joey Molland. Mark Healey and Randy Anderson are also featured on the album, respectively producing and playing guitar throughout.

The Motor Car & the Weather Balloon is a sweet piece altogether, with tracks like “Shackles” bringing a mix of 90’s Disney ballads by way of country rhythm. Brookes has a voice that slinks into ears, like a brandy-soaked Cat Stevens or maybe a gin drunk Phil Collins at a Texas Roadhouse cover night. And it works.

If you like melodic music with popping hooks, this is the guy for you to get into. The Motor Car & The Weather Balloon is at times cliche with narratives of overcoming one’s insecurities, but hey, it is filled to the brim with dire motivation from a guy who puts his all into his music. Definitely keep an eye on him in years to come.
