7 Ways The Weeknd Moves

in on Categories

1.  Billboard noted The Weeknd as a 19-time finalist in 16 categories. That right there is the type of domination that sets all-time highs for category consideration. Rationally, this places The Weeknd in every category at least once. At one point, did he have to compete against himself? Justin Bieber was a close second with twelve finalists in eleven categories. {Side Note:  is Bieber hanging out with Axel Rose? He looks a little, how do you say…rough.)

2.  The Weeknd Awards…or, the Billboard Awards…showed the Canadian musician with the following nominations: Top Artist, Billboard Chart Achievement Award (Fan-Voted), Top R&B Song, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Male Artist, Top Hot 100 Song, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top Streaming Songs Artist, Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Album, Top Selling Song, Top Radio Song, Top Streaming Song (Audio), and Top Streaming Song (Video) (Billboard). Basically, The Weeknd received an entry into every category that he was not biologically (or genre-ology) barred from – the female, Latino, country and gospel sections were Weeknd free.

3.  What this all means is that The Weeknd speaks to many listeners. Diverse audiences enjoy The Weeknd’s ability to wrap track.

4.  The Weeknd collaborates with other musicians, showing up as a featured artist frequently as well as welcoming fellow music-gods to feature on his own sound.

5.  Dan Rhys said, “He didn’t perform, but The Weeknd was the big winner at Sunday (May 22) night’s 2016 Billboard Music Awards, taking home eight honors, including Top Hot 100 Artist and Top R&B Artist at the event, broadcast live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas” (Billboard).

6.  JustJared noted that: “The Weeknd won the first prize of the night, Top Hot 100 Artist of the year, and dedicated it to Prince” (JustJared). He quoted The Weeknd who said: “I want to dedicate this award to the late, great Prince. Rest in Peace” (JustJared).

7.  ABC News said: “On a night dominated by women, a man, The Weeknd, walked away the big winner at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards Sunday night” (ABC). “The R&B superstar took home eight awards — the most of any male artist since 2011” (ABC).

Check out the bossy journalists demanding The Weeknd “turn to the right.” Jeez, can’t she tell he’s blinded by the gold reflection blinging from his new trophies? “The Weeknd Wins 8 Awards 2016 Billboard Music Awards”:
